Welcome to WoodFire Counseling

Hello, my name is Kayla Easland. I’m a Wisconsin therapist helping people heal from trauma.

After obtaining my Bachelor’s degree from UW-Madison, I became a first responder for about three years which ended in me leaving on my own healing journey. I later obtained my Master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and started my own practice to help others heal from trauma and childhood trauma. I use a client-centered approach drawing from several theories including interpersonal process, somatic experiencing and emotionally focused therapy.

What is Trauma?

What is Childhood Trauma?

Trauma has you saying, “I get triggered so easily”, “the images keep replaying in my mind”, or “I feel so disconnected from myself”. Every one’s experience and reaction to trauma is different. In short, trauma is an experience of distressing or stressful events that feels outside of our control or difficult to cope with. We may struggle to deal with the big emotions that come from such a traumatic event. And that’s totally normal. Experiencing trauma shouldn’t be normal. Trauma can be experienced from a young age, through adulthood, and into old age. It could be an experience in the work place, bullying, sexual assault, poverty, discrimination, war, or violence in the community. Trauma can cause lasting adverse effects on mental, physical, emotional and/or spiritual well-being. If symptoms persist for long periods of time, PTSD may develop (see here for more information from Mayo Clinic).

Trauma, particularly childhood trauma, can be deeply distressing or disturbing experiences that occur during early childhood. These experiences could be one time events or a series of events from a child directly experiencing the event or having unmet needs from a parent or caregiver who is affected by their own trauma. These experiences can create patterns of behavior and limiting beliefs that persist into adulthood. Individuals who have faced childhood trauma may feel overwhelmed emotionally and often struggle with feelings of being disconnected from themselves and others. This can often lead people into struggling to form healthy relationships and lead a fulfilling life.
